It is said that Chandravati was a very dear devotee of Lord Shiva. ![]() It was here that he found ' Swayambhu Shiva Linga'.Ĭhandravati worshiped the Jyotirlinga and eventually built a huge temple to house the Jyotirlinga. The surprised princess dug the ground under the tree. The cow was bathing the ground near the tree with the milk of its four udders. At one point she was in meditation when she saw a Kapila cow approaching a Bilva tree. The story can be found carved into the walls of the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga temple.Ĭhandravati was born as a princess, but she renounced the royal family and spent her life doing penance. The next story is of a princess named Chandravati. They decided to have darshan of Lord Kartikeya at Krauncha mountain. This incident made Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati sad. He left Kailash to live on Mount Kroncha. When Lord Kartikeya returned, he became enraged at the injustice done to him. Thus, after winning the competition, Lord Ganesha got married first. ![]() Lord Ganesha cleverly circled his parents seven times and said that his parents are the whole world to him. Lord Kartikeya climbed on his peacock and started his circumambulation. ![]() Lord Shiva suggested that whoever returns first after circumambulating the world, he will be married first. A debate broke out about which of the two was to be married first. This legend is related to the Kotirudra Samhita in Shiva Purana according to which once, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati decided to marry off their sons, Sri Ganesha and Sri Kartikeya. Mythology related to Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Therefore Mallikarjuna is more sacred to Hindus. It is said that the upper lip of Goddess Sati fell on the earth in Mallikarjuna. When Lord Shiva performed the dance of destruction with the burnt body of his wife, Goddess Sati, Maha Vishnu using his Sudarshan Chakra cut Sati's body into pieces, these pieces fell on the earth and became an important place of worship. Mallikarjuna is one of the 52 Shaktipeeth. Mallikarjuna is an amalgamation of two words, in which 'Mallika' refers to Goddess Parvati and 'Arjuna' is one of the many names of Lord Shiva. According to the beliefs, both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are present here in the form of Jyotirlinga. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga and is a very ancient place of worship for the followers of Lord Shiva. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is located in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh. ![]()
